One of Gore’s most intriguing buildings is the home of the Eastern Southland Gallery, on the corner of Hokonui Drive and Norfolk Street.
Formerly a Carnegie Library building and Gore’s public library for many years, this deep amber coloured building is in fact circular, providing the perfect home for some of New Zealand’s most extraordinary contemporary art collections.
Within the Gallery visitors can head to the John Money Wing, where the remarkable collection of expatriate kiwi Dr John Money is on display, as well as works from New Zealand artists Theo Schoon and Rita Angus, and American Lowell Nesbitt. Art enthusiasts can also enjoy Bambarra, Dogon and Baga carvings from West Africa, as well as paintings and carvings from Australia’s Elcho Island.
The Gallery is also home to the one of the largest collections of work by major contemporary New Zealand artist Ralph Hotere who built quite the following over his long career. In 1994, Hotere was awarded an honorary doctorate from the University of Otago and was appointed to the Order of New Zealand for services to New Zealand in 2012.
